Chapter Nineteen

Lexie

The whistle of the wind blowing just outside the bedroom window wakes me up. I know that I should get up early since we only have two days here, but between being snuggled up next to Damien and having two thick-knitted blankets over us, I’m so warm that I could almost consider never leaving this bed.

As I open my eyes slowly, I’m immediately met by Damien’s soft gaze as he props himself up on his elbow beside me. “Good morning, Beautiful,” His morning voice is low and husky, and he leans down to plant a gentle kiss on my forehead.

I smile and bury my face against his chest. “Morning,” I whisper.

He runs his fingers through my hair and for a moment I feel myself drifting back to sleep, but I feel his warm breath on the tip of my ear as he leans down and says, “I think I’m going to go get us some breakfast, do you have any requests?”

I roll to the side of the bed and stretch my arms and legs out like a cat. “Hm… I could really go for a bagel,” I say, smiling up at him sleepily.

“Can do,” he says as he gets out of bed and gets dressed. I tug the blankets back up to my neck as he walks around the bed and leans down to kiss me. “I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

I listen to the sounds he makes after he leaves the bedroom; the floorboards creak under him as he walks to the front door, and when he puts on his coat, I can hear the heavy fabric land on his shoulders before he does up the buttons. When the front door shuts, I reluctantly roll myself out of the warm bed.

Today, the plan is to spend most of the afternoon skiing, so I rummage through my bag for a warm outfit to wear. I put on a white long-sleeved shirt and some black tights before layering on a pair of grey sweatpants for extra warmth. I sit on the edge of the bed and slip on some thick socks before pulling back my hair into a low ponytail.

It's not long before I hear Damien’s car pull back into the space in front of the cabin. When I look outside the window, I see him balancing a paper bag on top of a coffee tray as he fishes in his pocket for the keys, so I hurry to the door and open it for him. The way his face lights up when he sees me kind of reminds me of Mason—they’re both always so happy to see me, and it makes my heart melt.

“You look like you could use a hand,” I smile, taking the paper bag from the top of the coffee cups. The smell of freshly baked bagels, eggs, and bacon wafts out of the bag and makes my mouth water.

Damien slips off his shoes before setting the coffee on the small dining table next to the kitchen.
